I had the great honor to sit with Frederick Seidel and record him reading some of his poems. His poems were part of my college literature classes and it was a pleasure to meet him and get to work with him a little.
This video was both a blast and a challenge. The setting was wide open, making for some nice pan shots. But also making the acoustics kinda tricky. Wishing I had brought the lav mic for better audio. Will need to work on mixing audio levels in post for next time too.
This might be one of my most favorite assignment ever and a definite labor of love. This was pitched to us a while back, when we brought the Animal Care League on as bloggers. As a rescue pet owner, I was surprised to find that fostering is one of the most important aspects of a shelter’s support system. You can read the whole story here. The set up was a little tricky, but I’m pleased with how the round table situation worked out. It was also really nice having the two pups running around for added b-roll if not a little bit of a distraction. Seriously, how do people who work with dogs all day get anything done?
Kids these days. Building robots and whatnot. Crazy. This was fun both to get to hang out with kids who clearly enjoy learning and the teachers who enjoy teaching and to watch the robots. Audio wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating. Though the mic died in the middle. Very glad to have an extra at that point and to keep double checking.
Big news broke in Oak Park on Tuesday night when the Village Manager announced he was resigning. We were a little blind-sided by this. But quickly divided and conquered. I was on the Tom Barwin timeline. I’ve used Dipity before while at WBEZ so I was comfortable doing that. It was a little harder sifting through all the information. Also the slight problem of not a lot of visuals. Overall, I liked how it turned out. A broad look at Barwin’s years in Oak Park. You can see the whole thing here.
Got to Navy Pier to see a line of people outside, waiting to audition to for ‘The Voice.’ Instead of the usual question and answer clips, we asked the contestants to sing a bit of Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep.’ Read the full post here.
A horrible summer hail storm caused serious damage for a conservatory on the west side of Chicago. I got to head out there with Andrew Gill to report on it. First time I was interviewing with a radio-level voice recorder. But more than that, it was one of the more emotional stories. You can read and listen to the whole thing here.
